We received information today from the Indiana Department of Education that differs from what was communicated to us on Monday regarding additional potential weather-related school closures. The IDOE Director of Accountability informed us today that we will be granted a waiver for two additional e-learning days, if needed. While we hope that there will not be a need to close schools, safety is always our first priority. With the new guidance from the IDOE, if two future cancellations are needed, the days will be e-learning days. Additional days beyond what is granted by the waiver would need to be made up at the end of the school year. We apologize for any confusion this has created. We will continue to be transparent with any information we receive and communicate updates as quickly as possible.

The Indiana Department of Education permits school districts to use up to three asynchronous e-learning days for weather-related closures each school year. MCS has already utilized all three days for the 2024-25 school year. After consulting with the IDOE Office of School Accountability, we have determined that if an additional weather day is required, it would need to be made up in person or conducted as a virtual learning day with live instruction. Considering multiple factors, we believe the best option would be to observe a traditional “snow day” and schedule an in-person make-up day later. At this time, this scenario remains hypothetical, and we are hopeful that no additional weather days will be needed. However, in the interest of transparency, we wanted to communicate our plan. Should future cancellations be necessary during the current school year, we will observe a traditional snow day and collaborate with our teachers’ association to schedule the make-up date.

We have continued monitoring road conditions across all three townships of our school district, which spans nearly 100 square miles. Given start times and driver schedules, a decision had to be finalized by 7:30 a.m. Unfortunately, conditions in subdivisions and on many county roads have not improved enough to safely proceed with a typical school day. As a result, today, February 6, 2025, will be an e-learning day for MCS. Thank you for your understanding. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

Congratulations to Anna Yutzy, as she was honored during the Middlebury Moment at the school board meeting this past Tuesday. Anna is a wonderful student involved in many extracurricular activities including band, manager for basketball, NHS student council, Junior Optimist service club, 4-H rabbit club, and won the 2023 & 2024 Indiana Miss Amazing Pageant for girls with disabilities. She has also been selected for the 2025 class of Riley Champions for being a positive influence at Riley & in her home community! Anna was nominated by Principal Nathaniel, and supported by many in MCS, but one specifically mentioned in the nomination was NHS school counselor Amanda Clabaugh. Here is what Mrs. Nathaniel had to say about Anna: If you spend much time at Northridge or any of our events, you will see Anna. She is a highly-involved student and an absolute joy. Anna is the girl with a big smile and positive attitude. She is always willing to help those around her, and Anna doesn’t seem to know a stranger. I can’t think of many high school students as approachable and outgoing as she. Anna makes friends easily and has no problem talking with absolutely everyone! Anna is an important member of NHS in many ways, as a serious student, team manager, and NHS band member. So, whether it's in our building or out in the community, competing and winning in 4-H or Miss Amazing, being the Riley Champion or the champion of a friend she hasn’t met, Anna embodies the spirit of a Northridge Raider… and we honor her. Congratulations Anna. We are proud of you!

Our K-3 buildings had a blast celebrating the 100th day of school last Friday. Students participated in a variety of activities, including dressing up to be 100 years old, having a visit by a super hero who led students in 100 exercises, stacking 100 cups, and creating groups of 100 items. Happy 100 Day!
